The Flight Team

Med Evac missions consist of approximately 60% interfacility transports and 40% scene calls. Med Evac requires the flight nurses to have at least 3 years of ICU experience and hold an advanced certification prior to applying and the Paramedics must have at least 3 years of experience on a busy ambulance service. Although these are the minimum requirements - the crew hired typically has between 7-10 years of experience prior to beginning their flight careers. On a typical Med Evac flight, there is generally between 25-60 years of experience between the nurse, pilot and paramedic!! The nurses take the lead on the interfacility transports with the paramedics working to their strength by taking the lead on scene calls. Most of the paramedic staff hold part-time or full time paramedic positions throughout Colorado agencies such as: Thorton FD, Littleton FD, AMR-Boulder, Grand County EMS, Platte Valley EMS, Estes Park Medical Center Ambulance, Poudre Valley EMS, and Morgan County EMS to name a few. The nursing staff also continue to work full or part-time in ICU's and ER's throughout the state such as: North Colorado Medical Center, McKee Medical Center, Medical Center of the Rockies, University of Colorado Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, and Longmont United Hospital.

Med Evac also enjoys having their Dispatch Center located on site at North Colorado Medical Center. This team of highly trained flight dispatchers is a vital component of the entire flight operation. Our team fondly refers to them as our “guardians on the ground.”

Med Evac staffs its helicopters with the very best pilots in the industry. The pilots must have at least 2500 hours of flight time with 500 of that at high altitude, in order to apply with Med Evac. The pilots also undergo rigorous quarterly training that includes NVG, VFR, AVFR, Night VFR and mountain flying.

The medical team consists of a variety of RNs and Paramedics from diverse backgrounds in medicine. In 2008, Med Evac added a specialty High Risk Obstetric Transport Team (HROB). Each flight is staffed with a RN and a Paramedic, or on HROB calls, an RN and a HROB RN. This configuration is ideal for the service area and patient mix that the program encounters on a regular basis.

No flight team would be complete without the support of the myriad of EMS services, Law agencies, Fire Departments, communication centers and Hospital staff that they serve. Med Evac spends countless hours each year training our support staff in safe helicopter operations, loading, LZ preparation, and patient packaging. Additionally, the team has an Educational Outreach program that sends members of the experienced team out to do lectures as requested for CME credit – this is at no cost to the customers and ultimately benefits the patients and community!
